Keynote: Open Video, Open Society
Im Rahmen der Subkonferenz zu Video-Blogs wird Jesse Patel vom Miro-Projekt in einer Keynote über “Open Video, Open Society” beschreiben, wie eine Open Source Community das Fernsehen der Zukunft schafft.
Es freut uns sehr, eines der spannensten Open Source Projekte auf der re:publica’08 dabei zu haben. Miro, früher “Democracy Player” genannt, kann man am ehesten als RSS-Reader für Video-Inhalte bezeichnen. In meinem täglichen Medienkonsum nimmt der Player mittlerweile eine zentrale Rolle für bewegte Bilder ein: Einseits aktualisiert er ständig alle Video-Podcasts und liefert mir z.B. jeden Abend die Tagesschau oder die Inhalte meines NetzpolitikTV-Podcasts auf meinen Desktop. Andererseits kann ich sowohl Youtube-Kanäle abonnieren und die Inhalte abspeichern, als auch Video-Downloads über Bittorrent managen. Fast 4000 Channels stehen schon zur Verfügung und täglich werden es mehr.

In an ‘open society’, institutions of power such as government and business are tolerant of and responsive to the needs of the common people. In this speech Jesse Patel will tell the stories of activists and citizens using video to make the societies they live in more ‘open’, and will relate these activities to the projects of technological innovators who are pushing for more openness and equal access in the future of video. Jesse will focus on how Miro, the open source video platform developed by Participatory Culture Foundation (the organization where he runs Business Development), is laying the groundwork for a dramatically different, distributed mass media without the potential for censorship, where money doesn’t give content producers an advantage and with the public interest at its heart.
Die Keynote findet am Freitag, den 4. April um 14:00 Uhr im grossen Saal statt.
